A very special congratulations to Muna Mohammed, as the recipient for this year’s Justin T. Schram Memorial Award.
Muna takes the time to make sure CK does not have a hair out of place. As she engages with CK, she asks her how she would like her hair, and even though CK is non-verbal, CK lets Muna know if she approves of the style or not. CH lovingly refers to Muna as “Miss Muna” and misses her terribly when she is not in work. He enjoys his time with her in the community at the Dollar Tree, Walmart and the park. CH’s abilities can change from day to day and for CH’s safety he may need to be in a wheelchair. This is something CH can find frustrating, but with low key, positive encouragement from Muna, he is able to work through his frustration, so he can enjoy his time out and about.
JV is newer to the ATF program. At times JV can have a lot of energy and Muna will take JV (and JV’s supervisor) to the park so JV can burn some energy. Due to Muna’s encouragement for JV to become active during his day in some of the program activities JV now plays bingo (sometimes even calling the numbers). Muna also encourages JV to complete production work so he can earn a paycheck, which is something new for JV to do. In every sense of the word, Muna is a champion for inclusion and equity.
Her outstanding efforts exemplify dedication, heart, and a vision for a better world where everyone, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to thrive. It is a privilege to nominate Muna for this honor. Well deserved!
